Gender
The range of characteristics that a society defines as being masculine or feminine which determines roles, behaviours, constraints, and opportunities associated with being male or female. It describes what is acceptable and expected of men and women in a particular culture, at a given point in time.

Gender disaggregated data 
Data collected separately on men and women.

Gender-based occupational segregation
Inequality in the allocation of women and men across different job categories. It can be vertical (under/overrepresentation of women in a sector) or horizontal (under/overrepresentation of women in certain roles/work tasks).

Gender-based violence and harassment
Violence and harassment directed at persons because of their sex or gender or affecting persons of a particular sex or gender disproportionately. It includes sexual harassment.

Gender neutral toilet 
Toilet that is not separated by gender or sex.

Gender-responsive
Identifying underlying deep-rooted inequalities between women and men, and then working to transform them. Gender equality becomes central.  

Global Union Federation
International federations of national trade unions organizing in a specific industry, sector or occupational group. The ITF is a Global Union Federation.

GUF
Global Union Federation.

Human Rights
Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more.  Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The purpose of the MUTCD is to set minimum standards for all Traffic Control Devices used on U.S. roads and highways.

NETWON
Nepal Yatayat Mazdoor Sangh (transport workers’ union in Nepal).

Norm
An accepted standard or a way of behaving or doing things that most people agree with.

OSH
Occupational Safety and Health.

Psychosocial hazard/risk
Anything in the design, management or organisation of work that could result in negative psychological, physical, and social outcomes such as work-related stress, violence and harassment.

Ratification / Ratify
When governments agree to put the contents of an internationally agreed standard into national law and practice, and it becomes binding (obligatory).

Recommendation (ILO)
Non-binding guidelines which give important guidance to governments and are important tools for campaigns and negotiations.

A room with toilets that is in a public place.

Transit Authority
A transit district or transit authority is a government agency or a public-benefit corporation created for the purpose of providing public transportation within a specific region.

Transit District 
A transit district may operate bus, rail or other types of transport including ferry service, or may operate other facilities. In some cases, the transit district may be part of a larger organization such as a state Department of Transportation (USA).

Transit Operator
Driver of public service vehicle for example a bus.

TUMTIS 
All Transport Workers’ Union (Turkey).

International Association of Public Transport.

UN
United Nations.

Unite
Unite the Union (UK).

United Nations Human Rights Council
United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world.

Victimisation 
A specific term used in discrimination law to describe action by an employer, against an employee, in retaliation for involvement in bringing, or supporting, a complaint of discrimination.

Violence and Harassment 
A range of unacceptable behaviours and practices, or threats thereof, whether a single occurrence or repeated, that aim at, result in, or are likely to result in physical, psychological, sexual, or economic harm, including gender-based violence and harassment.
